What makes BMW unique? It could all be chalked up to one thing: Our belief that ideas are everything. And as an independent company, we have the freedom to stand by the leading-edge concepts of our engineers and designers, to protect unconventional thinking - and let great ideas live on to become ultimate driving machines.

The Germans engineer things very well-most-times. then they let the stylists loose and ruin it. the increasing use of foreign basic workers lowers the quality somewhat. There is evidence in them that you can be too clever for your own good, and too expensive. Or too technically perfect, when simplicity will do.

Most BMW's have an exceptionally smooth ride, sporting large wheels and low-profile street tires. The M (Momentum) series feature high-quality sport tunded suspensions, close ratio gearboxes, elite performance under the hood, some with turbo and twin-turbochargers, and a new standard of reliability. Unbeatable sleekness in appearance inside and out; most of Bavarian Motor Works' cars feature Xeon headlights that are brighter than most, and extremely low-profile fin style radio antennas. Inside, most feature standard perforated leather seats that fit like a glove, GPS navagation systems, and touch screen climate control and radio control.
BMW's are only getting better and I would heavily consider them one of the most affordable luxury automobile makers in the industry today.
BMW's are greatly used in street and track racing due to their high quality performance numbers.
They really are incredible machines.

BMW's now have extremely low ratings on consumer reports, JD Powers and Edmunds with respect to reliability and dependability. Most European cars (I own a 92 Volvo with >200,0000 miles) manufactured in the last 10-12 years now rate as among the lowest in the world-- approximately with the old Yugos of yesteryear! A 10 year old Lexus, Infiniti or Acura has greater reliability than a brand new European car (Volvo, Mercedes, Audi, Range Rover, Saab, etc.) according to consumer research over the past 10 years.
I'm not down on BMW's and you have to also know that they still set the standard for excellent driving experience. I think the issue is balancing what you want in a car with what best fits your criterria.
I would Ignore the 1-2 opinions here, research is gathered from 1,000's of reviewers-- much more reliable- for the above companies that do car reviews.
BMW's are sexy, beautiful, fast, drive extremely well and established an excellent reputation 20-30 years ago.... for those who know cars well, they're viewed as overpriced and mechanically poor. While they are used for racing, for regular drivers, there has been a huge problem with reliability and dependability.
Finally, if you like being on a first name basis with your mechanic, if your mechanic has given your car a name like Sophia or Janet, if the shop has named a door after you, if you like having a mechanic on retainer......... and if you like driving a red 1990 Ford Taurus as a loner while your car is in the shop week after week- by all means by a BMW, Mercedes or most any other Earopean car.
Much better options now are the Lexus, Infiniti and Acura lines, all of which have received Consumer Report's, JD Powers and Edmund's highest ratings..... contrast that to most European cars and the data will give you everything you need to know.

Its not they are better but the reputation is better... BMW has a track history of being really good performing vehicles made to also be daily driven... then they stepped up and added the M badge and it was set in stone.... but mainly its usually looks luxury and power that made them better now with strong competitors like the new Skyline or the G35 coupe the field is more level in my mind
