If i recieve a letter from emory that says they are thrilled by my interest in their university, does that mean that I would probably get admitted if i apply?
also, if i want to get into pennsylvania, but i don't recieve a email or a letter from them for academic excellence, does that falter my chances in getting in?

No, that doesn't mean anything. Those letters are sent just to catch your interest. A private school is pretty much a business and you are the customer. Those letters are like advertising.

It only means that you will get in if they tell you that you are accepted.

A letter telling you tha they are thrilled that you applied is simply a marketing move that does two things. It acknowledges receipt of your application and it gives you a good feeling about the place. The latter is important because it increases the likelihood that you will go there if they accept you & the Yield is an important number in the rankings.

In short -- the letter means little.

Getting the letter doesn't increase your chances just as not getting a letter doesn't reduce your chances. I don't think the word "falter" is correctly applied here.

it doesn't always mean that. Look really closely to see if their is anything you need to do like phone #. look really close at the letter.
