John McCain -- He overcame the horrific experience to become a leader in US politics.
Wilma Rudolph -- The Olympian was the 20th of 22 children. Born prematurely, she overcame ouble pneumonia and scarlet fever at the age of four to become a runner at the age of 13 and winner of three Gold medals in the 1960 Rome Olympic Games.
Hellen Keller -- She overcame being deaf and blind to become a strong, intelligent, educated woman as well as an outspoken advocate of women's rights and pacifism who spoke before leaders in 25 countries.

Lance Armstrong would be a good example to me. He survived testicular cancer, a germ cell tumor that metastasized to his brain and lungs in 1996. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery, and extensive chemotherapy.
He won the Tour de France seven consecutive times, from 1999 to 2005.
