The Milky way is in our galaxy and has become the name of our galaxy, though what we see in the sky as the Milky Way is not our entire galaxy and was not recognized as a galaxy until the 20th century.

Before the concept of galaxies was understood, "Milky Way" applied to the fuzzy band visible in the night sky in remote areas and in the times before cities were full of electrically powered light pollution.

It appears as a milky band, ergo it was called the Milky Way. (In other cultures it has other names, such as "Silver River" in Japan and China.) Galileo turned his telescope on it in the 1600s and saw that it was actually a bunch of stars. The stars are so dim and so close together (as seen on the sky) that they fuzz out into this solid band when looked at with the naked eye.

It turns out that these are stars that are a part of the disk of our galaxy. There is enough dust in galactic plane that we cannot see very far in visible light, and these stars are mostly associated with nearby spiral arms, though in the direction of the galactic center the milky way is a bit brighter and there is a hint of the galactic bulge in long exposures.

Note that the word "galaxy" derives from the greek word 'gala' which means milk. It is more accurate to say that galaxies were named for the Milky Way rather than the Milky Way is a galaxy!

The Milky Way *is* our galaxy. We're located in it. Check this website to see where Earth is located in the Milky Way =>http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/astronomy/solarsystem/where.shtml There are about 200- to 400-billion other galaxies in the entire universe.
