though I think I'm one of the minority who still do it, cleaning out the dirt of the old year and having a clean slate for the New Year! etc

Usually we do, every room cleaned, all bins out, all washing done, everybody showered close to midnight. However this year things have been really stressful as gran is in hospital, so mum and me decided just to sit down and relax for once in the last few weeks.

However, our neighbour still firstfoots us with a lump of coal. Got to still have some tradition.

Guid new year tae ye whipass.

Well, it likely was your fault, but I have to admit that I would probably do the same thing if I saw a puppy running loose. I have, actually, and I have caught large dogs as well, but they have come to me when called or coaxed and I did not scruff them, but put a leash on them instead. As for everyone saying that this pup is abnormal, perhaps it is just going through a fear stage. I had a huge mixed breed who was afraid of everything when she was that age,and I've also had a VICIOUS 3 week old pup: <<<

No, I don`t but I think it`s great that some do still hold up the traditions. Well done you. I normally do my cleaning when I take the tree down on Epiphany or just before. Happy 2008 to all.

Hi Whip, you and me both, i never stopped scrubbing yesterday. I take off of my mum, she would be cleaning out the bathroom at ten to midnight, with her lippy and best frock on!
However unlike ,my mum, who is currently in Benidorm whooping it up with Dad, we were all in our beds before midnight!!
Hope you had a good one!!

No but I clean the clock,Whip so that I can see what the time is! I save the house cleaning for Spring.
Anyhow - Happy Hogmanay - we had a Scottish teacher at primary school ("The Loch Ness Monster" we called her - behind her back!) and she always said that Hogmanay was more important than Christmas - even though it was a Church of England primary school!
You wouldn't get away with it today - but she was a great teacher and that's all that mattered (although woe betide you if you crossed her or forgot your times tables!).

Edit : Although if I was expecting in the New Year I would want my house spotless for the new arrival(s)!!

no, i can think of better things to do than the cleaning.

i have always been told not to do any washing on new years day though as you end up washing someone away (ie someone you know will die)
