there are no cheap sports cars and cheap insurance aint gonna happen with a sports car thats hilarious. About the cheapest thing I have heard of that may fit the bill is the nissan altima with all the extras like sports suspension and a few other extras that will run you about 25 grand plus what you let the dealer scam you out of when you buy the car. Most high powered sports cars start at 30K and go up from there rapidly. As for insurance you need to buy the car first park it in your driveway and pick up the phone and yellow pages and start calling local insurance agents and asking for quotes. After they ask about 40 questions including age, address, zip code , married, live with mom, credit report , work or student, man or woman and plenty of other nosy nonsense they will give you a quote. Your first 12 months is going to be higher it should come down after that if you have no tickets or accidents. If you can find a six month policy the first time around you will pay higher rates for six months . Once you get a renewal notice it is like gold to you you xan go call any insurance and get a quote. best of luck

For that kind of money, if you don't want something you'll be working on more than you'll be driving, you have to choose: Straight line speed, or handling.
Your choices are:
Speed:
Camaro/Firebird
Ford mustang/Mercury Capri (80s)
Lincoln Mark VIII
Handling:
Mazda Miata
Toyota MR-2
Edit: A 2nd or 3rd gen Supra or 1st or 2nd gen RX-7 could be had for that price and would be sort of a balance of the two, but they aren't much better than a Mustang as a first car, and the RX-7 isn't especially reliable, particularly for a novice. (It's demanding and strict in terms of maintenance.)
This being your first car, a Mustang or Camaro, and to a lesser degree the Mark VIII, are a TERRIBLE idea. Too much speed can get you into trouble. Too much handling can only get you OUT of trouble (well, pretty much...I understand snap oversteer can happen on the MR-2...I never came close to that though).
If you want a sports car for your first car, and that's your budget, the ONLY good choices are the Miata and MR-2. (Maybe a Civic SI, Acura Integra, or CRX, if you can find a good one, but FWD kind of puts most of them on the edge of being sports cars)

really, i don't know if theres a better little car for that kind of money.
and if you get one for like 2k (blown engine or something) spending a couple more grand would put a mustang 5.0 in it.

where can you buy a 350Z, or a diesel jetta for 3-5 grand?
