I've only been playing for 50 years, so I'm still learning.. I wish I had a teacher... I also wish I could read music.

You don't HAVE to have a teacher, but it's nice to have someone to show you what you're doing right or wrong and help you progress along the way.

Good Luck !!!!... and welcome to our society !!!!

It's better if u can get a teacher. I had lessons when i was a sophmore in highschool.. I didn't stick with it. but, learned acoustic. They teach you how to read music and how to keep time with the 4th count at least that's all I can remember it was a long time ago. Plus you learn how to tune your instrument properly as well as the cords. so. there's a lot to it but, I'm sure a lot of folks are self taught and do very well.

Best wishes to you and good luck with your new hobby/career move..

You will be able to teach yourself to a point,at which time a good instructor will be a benefit.Sure basic cords, notes and positioning can be acheived but the physical instruction to learn how to make runs and bleand notes and scales.
So find an instructor to help.

I taught myself to play, but it's much easier to just get lessons.

as a musician myself, i gotta say that its alwaysbetter to have a private lesson teacher becase they know that they're doing; you don't (yet). They know the tricks, they best way to learn, and know how to help you with troubles. Try to teach yourself, and you could teach yourself wrong, thus leading you to need a teacher to start over and correct your mistakes. So, it makes it easier to just start with a teacher in the first place =]

See how things go with teaching yourself, or with using videos or books. If things don't work out, you can get a teacher.

Good luck.
