After Alexander died the Macedonian territory was split up, if it had never been split up do you think Rome would have conquered Greece years later? I am not a history buff, so if I am mistaken be gentle. What do you think?

Mr. Fancy Pants notice I said, "years later". As in if he didn't die and lived to be an old man, and Macedon remained in tact, would it have lead to the submission to the Romans.

This is a fun question to debate. Regardless of when Alexander dies, when Rome conquers Greece, right after they defeated Hannibal and Carthage, Rome was ready to take on anybody. What truly killed the Greeks and MAcedonian control was what had always been the Achilles heel of Greece, their unwillingness to work together. Rome played Anti-Macadonian against their defacto rulers. With Carthage defeated and Egypt/the Ptolemys now subserviant to the Romans, Macedonia had no help from its once ally and certainly none of the pissed off city states which had had their liberty and autonomy destroyed by Philip and Alexander. Greece was ripe for the picking no different then Persia was during the epoch of Alexander.
But let me propose this idea. Had Alexander gone west after defeating Persia and ran into Rome then, during his lifetime, the world would have never heard of Rome and the curiousity of the Greeks would have pushed them across the Atlantic into the Americas millenia before columbus.

Rome conquered Greece and Macedonia in 146 BC and ended the autonomy of the Greek city states. Greek power in the world had already waned for a century before however, as the Seleucid and Ptolemaic empires were only small kingdoms by then. As far as the general history of Greece, the above poster does a good job with most of the info, but the Minoan civilization was established about 2000 BC, while the Mycenaeans were a separate people (the first Greeks--the Minoans were not Greek) and established their civilization around 1600 BC. The Minoans fell around 1400 BC, the Mycenaeans around 1100 BC. The Dark Ages are from 1100-800 BC. The rest she covered. Sudeep you are absolutely incorrect. Rome is not a 'medieval' civilization. The fall of Rome itself begins the medieval world. Greece and Rome are BOTH Classical civilizations.

You asked me to be gentle, so I will. You're talking centuries here bud. Military tactics changed considerably. If Alexander didn't change the phalanx, he'd have been defeated just like his descendants were, for that very reason. And if he HAD changed tactics (like I suspect he would have, given the rate of defeat under the old tactics), he still would have been at a disadvantage, having to re-train his troops when the enemy was obviously gung ho and ready to go with the latest strategy. Had the strategies changed gradually over the centuries, as they no doubt would have if nature had taken its course (via combat), all bets would be off. Anyone can defeat anyone on any given day. It all comes down to who DOES it when it really counts. History is a one-way street, you know?

And in this corner, weighing in at 6,329 Square miles and possessing a kick a** , army of buffed up young men wearing a cool shiny helmut with horsehair in the topm are Alexander and his Greek phalanx. And in the other corner, weighing in at 7,934 Square miles, stands the pride of all the Italian peninsular and wearing some stylish sandals and a bunch of shiny armor, the famous Roman Legions led by their all-pro stud, Julius Caesar.
And the winner by a knock-out in the 7th round is "Alexanderrrrrrrrrrrrr the Greattttttttttttt!!

Rome would have conquered them.
The Romans more flexible cohort battle system twice in history defeated the Macedonians strong but unwieldy phalanx battle system. And they probably could have defeated them more if they had to.
