It is comforting to them to feel they are drinking "diet" soda. It makes the big mac okay to eat.

Lmao...I asked my dad this same question and he explained to me that it's not really about the soda being "diet" but regular soda tastes sweeter and more syrupy than diet so that's why he drinks it....but yeah that is a cliche...mofo orders 2 big mac meals, 2 apple pies and a sundae and gets a super sized diet coke....lmaoooooooooo

I don't think it matters. Recent studies show that the obesity rate in diet soda drinkers is equivalent to regular soda drinkers.
