It's discrimination but unless it's specifically listed as one of the things you can not discriminate against they are not violating the law. I've run into this one as well. Often companies come up with ridiculous things to discriminate on just to thin out the applicants.

Consider: You have 100 applicants. You have 2 jobs. There's no way 48 of them are bad applicants. Almost all of them will be fine workers. How do you make a decision? Do you even want to interview 100 people just to fill 2 jobs? Why not kick out 50 of them before the interview process by excluding people who drive trucks, and then another 25 who wear tennis-shoes, and then another 15 that have short hair? 10 applicants to fill 2 jobs. Now that's a lot more manageable.

It sucks, it's completely unfair, it shouldn't happen, and I'm sorry it does.

Does the company you applied told you so when you were interviewed that they wouldn't hire you because you do not possess a vehicle? If that would be the case then it is discriminatory in nature, they should have posted their ads in the newsprint that ONLY THOSE WITH CARS are hired then you won't be disappointed.

Actually company can IMPOSE this kind of requirement if the job they have in mind are SALES oriented jobs the person
hire would definitely need a vehicle in going to the farthest place they are assign with. I do not think they will ask you to use bicycle.

If these is your only problem then why not BUY YOURSELF a CAR to answer their job requirement. Nope I DONOT THINK THIS IS DISCRIMINATORY IN NATURE if the company hire only with people with cars.

Any time they acknowledges that there is ANY difference between you and anyone else, that is the DEFINITION of discrimination. As others have said, MOST forms of discrimination are perfectly legal. Some are actually REQUIRED by law. (Banks can't fire anyone with a felony record). I have never heard of a law against discrimination on the basis of vehicle ownership. If not owning a car is actually the reason you were not given the job, as opposed to the reason you were given, or maybe assumed, than the job probably DOES require SOME form of travel that requires having a cor.

How would they know if you have a car or not? Legally, all they can ask is if you have reliable transportation. Legally, all you have to say is yes or no.

I would think you have a case to argue. Sounds like discrimination to me.

Hmmmm... i would guess that this isn't the real reason.

In your next interview, say something like "I lost out on another job because the hiring manager was concerned that I don't have a car. I have means of transportation to and from work, so I'm hoping that won't be an issue for you."

See what they say. If nothing else, you've taken that excuse off the table...
