because we don't seem to realize it's quantity over quality when it comes to weight loss.
and if you didn't notice being fat is inexpesive. healthy organic foods cost more than others and meat prices are based on weight and fat weighs less then muscle so fatty meats weigh less than lean meats in the same size package. and that the biggest burgers with fries and a drink are almost always a $1.00 less than the salads by themselves.

In the EU growth hormones for livestock are ILLEGAL, whereas in the U.S. they're in widespread use. These hormones end up in meat and, worse, dairy products, which, I believe, accounts for the epidemic of childhood obesity the U.S. is now facing. So, growth hormones in livestock -- that's the short answer. Another is that people in other countries tend to have a lot more exercise in their daily lives; walking to the train, to the store, up lots of stairs, etc. I know a number of Europeans who detest gyms, but get tons of exercise outdoors by riding bikes, walking, etc. A third reason: I think people in the U.S. tend to be more stressed-out than people in a lot of other countries, and this leads to fat retention. Anyway, good question! Interesting to think about.
