First, you need to be 21. Second, you need some form of id (like a driver's license). Third, go to a gun store and pick out the handgun you like. Fourth, after background check, you can take it home.
Important...there is no open carry of handguns in the St of FL. So if you want to carry a handgun off your property then you must have a concealed weapons permit. see link:
http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/weapons/index.html
If you have the permit before you buy the handgun then the backgorund check takes a few minutes, and I don't know how long it takes if you don't have a concealed weapons permit.
Good choices for personal defense:

Sig Sauers - http://www.sigsauer.com/Default.aspx
H&Ks - http://www.hecklerkoch-usa.com/
Springfield XDs - http://www.springfield-armory.com/

If price is a consideration take a look at the used market. I've also heard (no personal experience) that the Bersa Thunder (.380 Auto) is a good budget handgun (new for around $350). However, I would stick with either a 9mm (cheapest ammo of the ones I listed), .40 S&W, .45 ACP, or .357 magnum. Another plus with the .357 Magnum is that it can also fire .38 Specials (a lesser round but still good for personal defense).
Good luck.

Go to a range and rent several pistols and revolvers to see what works for you.
