I checked that with Google Earth, from Coast to Coast in a straight line, the nearest would be only 115 miles. (186 kilometers)

North Shields To Amsterdam

Not really sure what you are trying to find out. You have to remember that because a sea crossing is involved, it is pointless thinking about 'mileages'. The relevant measurement has to be time.
eg. North Shields - Ijmuiden (Newcastle - Amsterdam)< > 15 hrs.
Hull - Rotterdam < > 11 hrs.
Harwich - Hoek van Holland < > 71/2hrs.
Having said that I would suggest that the shortest straight line distance between U.K.and the Netherlands would not be more than 130 miles.

If you drive to Dover, get the ferry to Calais, it is a 220 mile drive from there to Amsterdam, and can be done in a few hours in you put your foot down.

By air, London to Amsterdam is a mere 230 miles.
