In three days there is absolutely nothing they could do about it. An impact with a mile-big asteroid would possibly be enough to cause global climatic changes like nuclear winter and result in the extinction of many species.
Much of this has to do with how fast the object is moving when it hits earth. That matters as much as size. But I would guess that a 30 to 100 mile asteroid, traveling at a typical speed, say 20 or 30 KM per sec., would be enough to wipe out humanity. And this extinction might be indirectly as a result of the destruction of much of the food web.
I would disagree with nothinguseful... by a factor of a couple hundred.

I would say that a strong magnetic field should be placed in the Pacific so that the giant asteroid could hit it there and no great damage would occur.....

It would kill most of the earths population. If it hit a lot of people would die, then because of the smoke, after some days the surviving ones would die also. And i don't think that will happen because a lot of the big asteroids were used to form our planets.

One mile diameter would be overkill. A meter hitting the earth of even a 100 yeards diameter would be catastrophic and would cause repercusions that would destroy most of life.
But, hey, the world will end; it is just a matter of time.

they don't have a way and thats a big one its going to be big trouble prepare for tidal waves and earthquakes and enough airborne debris to cause year round winter! if it hits us square it'll be worse than that.

I saw a program on the same scenario in Discovery Channel.
If a asteroid was about to hit Earth, then many people will probably start stocking up on a lot of supplies and equipment. There would be a whole lot of chaos and many people will travel far away from the place which was fore casted to be hit. Tribal people will probably survive the best because of their wide survival skills.
I guess that the government will probably shoot SOMETHING in order to break up the asteroid.
