I own a shop, and think this; I see what comes into shops to be worked on, and I can tell you the KIA is junk. If a vehicle is extremely easy to purchase, looses its value really quick, and the value of the vehicle is less than what people owe on them, then I have got to think something is bad wrong. They are the disposable lighters of the auto industry. I have seen them being sold "buy one, get one free" around here over the past two years. If they are willing to give you one, to get you to purchase another, then it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. If you get a warranty on a vehicle that covers the transmission case, and not the internal parts, then what do you have? The transmission case never breaks, but the insides fail often. You get what you pay for! If you buy one of these vehicles, then you will pay for it a dozen times over. These vehicles (and others) ought to be against the law to sell to anyone. It is always best to purchase something that has a good track record, a good warranty, and has some value after you own it a few years. If any vehicle doesn't meet or exceed this criteria, then run as fast as you can in the other direction. Think about this; Why would any company sell a vehicle to someone who has bad credit? It must be because they can't give them away to people who has any buying power. Toyota's & Honda's are pretty good vehicles, but once they break, (and they will), the cost of repairs (many times) will total loss the vehicle. If you intend to keep it, and get rid of it as soon as the warranty is out, then they make good vehicles. If you intend to keep it a long time, then it would be wise to figure in the cost of repairs before purchasing any vehicle. Consumer reports has the Toyota listed as the best vehicles, but the news is also; they are getting into trouble with poor quality now, so who knows what to think? Honda has made a good vehicle for a long time now, and the only drawback on them is the engines has a nasty habbit of blowing head gaskets, and at over $1,000 a pop to repair them, makes one think there isn't any good vehicles left out there to buy. I own a Chevrolet 1994 S-10 Blazer with 250,000 miles on it, and it still runs good. I've spent less than $1,000 on it since I bought it (new) for repairs, and these were normal repairs one would see on any vehicle, so I guess I ought to see if I can get my money back for that piece of junk. GM, Ford, and Chrysler, are all making some good quality vehicles now (they have to, in order to stay in business) so I think I would have a look at something made here, that can be repaired without breaking the bank to do so.
How can anyone say a vehicle that is only 3-4 years old be very reliable? It hasn't been on the market long enough to determine if its reliable or not. Once a vehicle gets a label of being junk, then that hurts the value of even a newer & better edition. Don't fall for that snake oil.
Glad to add my 2 cents worth!!!

Started to buy and take up payments on a Kia after they first came out. The man owed $4k on the car but the bank only allowed $1800 on the loan for almost new vehicle. Kia mechanic said if they never make another one they still have plenty to work on!

Saturns from the 90s did not last long...they had two mileage plateaus where things seem to fail en masse. (roughly 70 and 100 thousand miles). New Saturns are completely different cars. They're all based on GM's new platforms (underpinning the Cobalt, IIRC G6, Solstice, and some European models). They're probably a better bet than a new Kia.
Kia and Hyundai have both seen substantial improvements recently. I'd say "sure, why not" to most post-2004 Hyundais. But while Kias may all be based on those Hyundais, the reliability and build quality isn't quite there. A lot of them are built in different factories, and they must not be using all the same parts. It's probably like a German VW/Mexican VW kind of thing.
Anyhow, people who get good Kias tend to love them. But a lot of people get bad ones. If you get a Saturn, you're likely to want something else just because it's a bore to drive. If you get a Kia you have a stronger possibility of wanting something else because the Kia is bleeding you dry.

Use it.
All that said...if you're going to get a Kia, the one you REALLY shouldn't get is the Rio. The Hyundai version (the Accent) has been having a lot of reports of mysteriously plummeting fuel economy that the dealers can't fix. I can't imagine the Kia is any better.

The ones made before 2001 are not reliable, but the ones made after are very reliable.
Honda's and Toyota's are a little more reliable but not that much more expensive. They should still be around the same price.

Generally, Kias are OK.
Stay AWAY from Saturn, though! Those things are junk.
Rule of thumb is that Japanese cars are the best, though, so see if you can get a slightly used Subaru for the same money. You'll save money in the long run on repairs.
