Can babies be allergic to their mother's Breastmilk? My baby (3 weeks old) grunts horribly after I feed her. Her stools are normal, and she grunts and clinches her fists. This upsets me terribly. Any suggestions?

I've never heard of a baby being allergic to their own mothers breast milk. Keep a diary for the next few days of what you are eating. Some foods that give you gas can also give your baby gas( spicy foods, beans, peanut butter, broccoli etc.) Breast babies tend to have more stools and she may just be grunting to get them out. Usually they will go right after a feeding.

If her stools are normal, she is not constipated and it's just her bowels getting used to passing stools.

"If your baby does a lot of grunting when he poops don’t worry. This is normal. Babies sometimes grunt, cry or turn red when they have a bowel movement. This is nothing to worry about. A lot of new parents mistake this grunting for straining and constipation. Once your baby gets used to his bodily functions and how they feel, he won’t be as vocal about having them."

A baby can't really be allergic to their mother's breast milk. It is extremely rare for a baby to be lactose intolerant (which might be considered as an intolerance to breast milk). In these cases, a baby would be very ill right from birth. However, some babies will react to food proteins in their mother's diet. This can usually be resolved by removing the offending foods from your diet.

Yes, in a way.

The baby would not really be allergic to your milk, but what foods you're eating. My children are both allergic to the protein in cow's milk. Many breastfeeding mothers who have older allergic children will avoid the older's allergens. See the ped, and maybe an allergist.

It is very VERY rare for a baby to be allergic to breastmilk. Sounds completely normal to me. Dont worry!

That's not an allergy...
but no. They can't be allergic. Things IN breastmilk can sometimes upset them but that can be fixed with elimination.
What you're talking about is just baby behavior.

it might something you're eating or drinking. have the baby's pediatrician do an allergy test on her, so you will know what she's allergic to. Also, pay attention to what you're eating and drinking.

Let me give you an example. My sister in law, while breast feeding her 3rd child, would notice that my niece will break out in hives. a couple of hours before breastfeeding my sis in law would have a glass of milk or something with dairy. turns out my niece is highly allergic (not lactose intolerant, I mean my sis in law have to carry an epipen allergic) to all dairy products (she drinks soy milk now).

So, pay attention to what you're eating. Remember, whatever you eat will be in the breast milk. Your baby could be allergic to whatever you're eating.

There is no such thing as being allergic to breastmilk, but she may be reacting to something you're eating. When my daughter was under 2 months, she would have really bad gas if I ate veggies like asparagus, cauliflower and broccoli. Then she got over it, and I could eat them with no issues.
Some babies have lactose issues, so try cutting out your dairy and see how she does. Or nuts could also cause a reaction.
If she's gassy, try the mylicon drops, the bicycle legs, and carrying her like a football (with her belly pressing into your forearm; it always helped our daughter).
My daughter also just liked grunting, so...
Good luck! I know it'll get better.

Maybe she needs to be burped a bit more? My youngest would burp after feeding, but then I had to lay him on his stomach and rub his back and he would almost always burp again. He'd be very fussy if I didn't do it that way.
