I had the privilege of wearing one in the 50's, at that time it took talent to be put in the corner with a pointy little hat on, I was the envy of the whole class.

RE:
Were Dunce Caps really used by teachers in the 1930s and 1940s?
If so, it was very humiliating to the student.

Old pictures exist that capture the use of Dunce Caps used on the lazy student to humiliate him into action. I searched the net but couldn't locate a good one.
My teacher pinned a Tattle Tail on my back when I was in first grade. I was so short it drug the ground into the first thru sixth grader's lunchroom. Needless to say they jeered and I cried all day.
Yes i believe they were used and they accomplished their purpose...humiliation!

Not really. Seeing a teacher wearing a dunce cap was quite humorous to the students.

I certainly hope not because doing something like this could wreak havoc with a child's self-esteem. Many of the negative experiences of childhood remain throughout their lives and anyone who has been trusted to care for these little ones need to be as conscientious and careful concerning their emotional/mental well-being as with their basic learning skills.

Where I was raised, during the fifties, the teachers made those that misbehaved stand in a corner, facing inward. I gotta tell ya, it was kinda embarrassing. You could hear the other kids giggling, but you couldn't turn to see who was doing the giggling.

I remember my first grade teacher using one in 1959. I did not have to wear it but I remember it well. If someone had done that to a child of mine there would have been very serious problems.

My Dad told me they tried to make my Uncle Jim wear one in 5th grade. He just looked at the teacher and the teacher told him to go sit down. My Uncle Jim was 6'1'' tall in 5th grade and reached his full height when he was 16 at 6' 11'' .
