We are having trouble with our 2wire modem kicking off and then restarting. After contacting ATT (our ISP) they say that the problem is a virus in the computer and to have it cleaned. Does anyone know if this could be the case or is there another way to fix the problem (ATT say it itsn't them)? We use Avira PE Classic and LavaSoft Ad-Aware.

There are two solutions that I usually use.

First, download a AV Software that will help you detect, clean or quarantine, and make your computer secure. I have Windows Live OneCare with Windows Defender installed on my computer. Try Windows Live OneCare for 90-free day trial and switch to other AV Softwares after using it. After performing a full scan, clean, quarantine or delete the infected file (run in safe mode), make sure you have enough security on your computer.

The second solution I usually do when I got irritated, I reformat my computer and perform a clean install with AV software installed (without using the internet, using the disc) and installed 1 Firewall and 1 AV Software.

Note that installing 2 or more AV Softwares can lock or mess up your computer, it can also slow down and dump some useless files and make the hard drive space even smaller. Use only one AV software and one firewall, even though Windows has already a built-in firewall.

Use Windows Defender for firewall
I recommend Windows Live OneCare for AV Software or Norton 360 or PC-Cillin.

Do a full system scan, and see if it detects anything. If that's not the problem, then it's your modem. Either not connected right, or it's gone bad.

You can clean it literally, but taking apart the case and using an air nozzle to blow out the dust carefully with soft blows, and you can clean it in the sense they seem to mean, by going to www.downloads.com and searching for AVG Free and installing and running it, or searching www.downloads.com for "Anti-virus" software.

It might be a virus, though maybe they don't know enough to know what it is and are wanting to get out of having to visit in person or replacing anything.

I'd suggest that you try running an antivirus scan, as well as an antispyware scan.

If that doesn't help, I'd suggest that perhaps you download a different program and see if you can run another scan and see if anything gets picked up.

Good luck and I hope I helped and Happy New Year!
