the south end is safer than the north end. I would not stay at Circus Circus. I actually like the Tropicana in an upgraded room. They are clean and the staff is very nice there. And it is close to the hotels I like. I am sure it is Tropicana Avenue.

We stayed at the Luxor and LOVED it! IT is a fabulous hotel with reasonable rates and it located at the other end of the strip from Straosphere. Anything in the vicinity would be a good idea, New York, New York, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay, etc.

The South end is safer. If you can afford it try to stay in the area around Paris/Ceasers Palace, its kind of in the middle and a nice area. I have stayed at the Paris and Riveria. When I stayed at Paris I was not afraid to go walking outside alone, but at the Riveria I was not comfortable to go outside walking alone. Personally I want to try the Venetian!

Stratosphere is technically off the Strip which ends with Sahara Avenue. The closest Strip casino is Sahara. Some peoplel think the area of the Strat is "dangerous" but I would say not really.
Circus Circus is up the street from Sahara, has two towers and a manor/motel. About 1/4 mile from Strip and Sahara. I think for a first time visit you may find Circus a good deal but disappointing except they have the Adventure Dome for adults and kids, an indoor amusement park.
Hooters is not on the Strip but a mile down the road on Tropicana, an old convert casino that has had at least four names or more. It is small, noisey and boring.
At the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard South (Strip) and Tropicana are Tropicana, NYNY, MGM Grand and Excalibur. Next to Excalibur is Luxor then Mandalay Bay. Next to NYNY is Monte Carlo, and next to that is the construction of City Center (huge).
I would stay and have at Luxor, the pyramid. It has a brand new night club, a fantastic view from the pony wall outside the rooms down onto a main area, and a wide but slow ride on a 45 degree angle up railroad ties to the room. The views are fantastic and the sloped windows and window covering wild.
Coming into Vegas from CA you would exit at Tropicana and going east; the same if coming from UT. The freeway is just a hop down the road!
Have fun.

April, the Strat is located on North Las Vegas Blvd, but it is not on "The Strip." The Strip begins on the south end with Mandalay Bay. Travel north and it ends at North Fashion Show Drive in front of The Wynn. If you continue north on Las Vegas Blvd beyond Desert Inn Rd, it's like traveling back in time. I wouldn't call it dangerous, just old and cheesy. The Stratosphere is a complete dump. If you don't enjoy the aroma of vomit, then I'd advise you to stay out of that place.
Don't short change yourself and just stay on the strip. There are a few "off strip" casinos which are very cool. The Hard Rock Hotel is about five minutes from the Strip on Harmon Drive. Really cool place, indeed. The Rio and the Palms are both on Flamingo Blvd about two minutes from the strip. Both hotels face each other and are visible from the strip as well.
I see you have a couple of dumps on your list of hotels as well. Circus Circus is on the far North end of Las Vegas Blvd beyond Desert Inn Drive. Hooters hotel is still the San Remo with a face lift. Luxor is a decent place, but it's on the far south end of the strip. If you're planning on walking the strip, I hope you take your jogging shoes. Bally's isn't as nice as Luxor, but it's right on Flamingo Blvd, which is the most desirable location on the strip. For your price range, you should also consider Flamingo, MGM Grand, Treasure Island, and NYNY. Go onto www.travelworm.com. That's where you'll find the cheapest nightly rates.
I'm a former LV local, so that's how I know all this stuff. Hope it helps. If you need to know anything else, feel free to email me at angelncali@yahoo.com.

Try Flamingo Road, off the strip are The Westin, Tuscany Casino, The Clarion and Residence Inn. On the strip at Flamingo and Las Vegas Blvd is Caesar's Palace, The Flamingo, Bills Gambling Hall and Hotel, Ballys and Belagio.

Yes, the south end is safer. Try the Luxor, Tropicana, Harrah's, or Imperial Palace. They're all under $200.
