After Salome danced for her mother Herodias , on the request of her mother desired the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Herod because of his arrogant boast and not to look bad in front of his guests on his birthday had John beheaded in prison.

He was beheaded by Herod. There is a suspicion that John the Baptist was led into a trap by some of Christs followers. Because as the man who baptised Christ, he was technically senior in Judeaism.

Herod had him behead because his wife Herodios didn't like his teachings about Jesus.
