I am five months pregnant and my indoor cat scratched me up good today. She broke skin in two places. I have a call in to my doctor, but I am anxious and want to know if there is any major cause for concern. I know that I am not allowed to clean her litter, but are there any issues with being scratched by a cat? I know about bartonella, but couldn't find any info about bartonella and pregnant women.

H Mom of 3: Kitty will not be getting a new home when baby comes. She doesn't normally scratch...I was stupid enough to give her a bath and thought wearing a sweatshirt would be sufficient. I grew up having three cats (from the time I was a newborn) and turned out fine.

As long as an infection doesn't occur you should be fine. Since this is you cat and it is indoor, there is a low chance for you to get sick. Also, if your tetanous shots are up to date you should be fine.

I HATE that BS while ignorant (meaning uninformed) people attempt to get you to act on old different halves memories!! the only actual threat cats pose is of their clutter field – and that’s purely the case in the event that they eat flora and fauna, some thing my cats have in no way executed. in the journey that your cat is indoor purely, the prospect they’re even contaminated with toxomoplosis is next to none. If she has another wild clarification so which you will get rid of the cat, kindly ask her to modern-day you with some hard data of the prospect that concerns her, yet till then, you and your wellness care provider have no concerns with regard to the cat affecting your being pregnant. each time she brings it up, tell her the comparable element. If she would be a broken checklist, so are you able to. And if she tries to tell the cat will smother the toddler after its born (there are idiots that still think of this), enable her understand you’ve placed a crib internet on your registry if she’d % to purchase it to alleviate her fears. actually anybody in my family individuals has cats. I don’t have a sibling, nephew, cousin, or cousin’s newborn that wasn’t “uncovered” to cats in utero and that doesn’t stay with them now. no longer a single difficulty has been brought about for any people via a cat. we've 2 cats, and that they’re no longer likely everywhere till our newborn is allergic and you extra sensible believe we are able to objective to locate a answer with an allergist till now we’ll dare provide them up.

well if she broke skin then that bacteria could have gotten into your system and may make you sick. I would clean it with poroxide (spelling I know is wrong) to clean out any of the infection if you did not do that right after it happened and then I would probably look for a new home for kitty before the baby comes. The only reason that I say that is because baby starts rolling and moving very soon after birth, sooner than later and if baby see's the kitty the baby will go after it and how would you feel if the cat draws blood on the baby. No matter what mom says her eyes are always on baby is a liar, does she shower with the baby, goes potty with the baby, etc.

Those cat scratches will not hurt you. We have 8 cats and my daughter is 26w1d pregnant with my first grandbaby and our cats are very spoiled and my daughter loves to play with them and she is scratched all over. Don't worry about it.

If she has always been indoors, she probably has never contracted anything to concern yourself with.
And if you have had cats for many years, you probably already have some of the things and antibodies that physicians are concerned with during pregnancy, such as toxoplasmosis.
These are things that I was told by my doctor and vet when I was pregnant.

Don't worry yourself unless your doctor tells you there is cause for worry.

Just clean the scratches. You should be fine.

Just put some hydrogen peroxide on the scratches. If you get swelling, pain, or heat, then go to the emergency room because it could be infected. Cat scratches can cause some pretty bad infections some times; my sister had a doozy from one of her cats once.

As far as stuff such as cat scratch disease, or other weird bacterium, you would have already been exposed to it by now. Since you've had your indoor cat for awhile and it is indoors, no new weird stuff is likely.

Tip: get in the habit of trimming your cat's nails every other week especially since a baby is coming.
