The first sign that most women relate to being pregnant is a missed menstrual period. Not all women have regular periods, though. Menstrual periods can be affected by stress or illness, so it is best to watch for a number of other signs and symptoms: light menstrual period or spotting, tender breasts, being very tired, upset stomach or nausea, feeling loaded or needing to urinate often.

If your body has made enough HCG, a chemical in the test kit will react with the hCG in your urine. The tests show the presence of the hCG in different ways. In some, a ring forms in a liquid or a bead changes color. They can easily give a wrong result if the directions are not followed. Therefore, it is important to follow all the directions on the kit carefully.
