The first one, closest to the neck. Because mine is broken. It was like that when I bought it, but now the screw is out and its almost in the guitar.

The other one is loose too, and I tried tightening the screws, but they won't tighten. Like they're stripped or something.

So can anyone tell me what their for and how I fix it?

I'm not sure what make of guitar you have, but the 'screws' on the pickups are not really what holds them in place.
First, the pickups are what transmit the vibrations from the strings into electrical current that is sent to an amplifier.
The screws you see on the sides of the pickups are used only to move them up or down to adjust the loudness of the strings. Trying to tighten the screws will only lower the pickup bodies.
If you need to fix them, take them to a music shop or dealer who can re seat the pickups properly.
You may also try going to the website of the guitar brand you have for a manual that might show the pickup suggested heights.
Good luck.

It transfers the sound waves of the guitar into electrical signals so the amplifier can play them at a louder sound. As far as the loose screws go you might be able to use the next size larger screw to tighten them up.

The pickups "pick up" the magnetic field fluctuations caused by the vibrating string moving through the electric field of the pickups. This disturbance in the electric field is then picked up and sent to an amplifier, where it gets amplified and made to be audible.

As to the repairs on your guitar, take it to someone that knows what they are doing.
