I've always liked Gibson over Fender. But these entry-level pieces are most likely Chinese-made, and if it was me, I'd look around some more. You might be able to find a good used American-made electric for not a lot more. If you can't find anything you can afford and these two are the only choices (ask around local music shops and I bet someone can put you into a good-quality starter - you don't need a new one), then go with the Epoch.

I would say the black gibson.

The reasons being is that it has a simpler layout, with two pickups instead of 3. It also doesn't have the tremelo bar, so a beginner doesn't end up being distracted by it.
Being distracted by it, in itself probably isn't such a big deal. But judging by the price of the guitar, I'd be willing to bet that the tremelo system on that red guitar isn't of the highest quality. With that being the case, it probably won't take too much messing with it to throw the guitar out of tune. A beginner probably shouldn't be distracted by having his guitar go out of tune so much, and instead concentrate on learning the basics before getting into tremelo systems.

Thats another point. With the Gibson having 2 pickups instead of 3, there is only 3 pickup settings to mess with instead of 5. So that simplifies that, also.

Another factor to consider. Strat necks are usually longer than other guitar necks, including Gibson. This means that a beginner will have to employ farther finger stretching to travel from certain notes to others. He will also have to bend farther to make a whole note bend.
Gibsons necks arent that long in comparison, so a beginner would have an easier time getting from note to note travelling horizontally on the neck. And he won't have to bend the strings as much to reach higher notes during bends. This makes it easier on his fingers as he starts out.

The sound difference between humbuckers and single coils is a personal preference though, although humbuckers, like on the black Gibson, don't have that buzz that comes from single coils.

Either one will do. Especially at those prices.

The starcaster is likely to be lighter. But I would go for the Gibson because I like the sound.
