You wish a person ``Happy New Year`` before hand because you may not be with that person when the time comes. Don`t get stuck on little things like that, when the world is coming apart.

I don't know. I was wondering that myself today when people were saying that to me at work. It would be more appropriate to say it upon return on Jan. 2nd.

Don't you think?

For the same reason they say Merry Christmas, Happy Easter, and Happy Valentines Day before the actual event - it's a greeting!

Because they want to wish people a happy new year because they never knoe if they get to say it later, and it's just plain custom to do that.

Because it's usually more of a *have* a happy new year...."best of luck" in the new year, etc, etc, etc. It's just been shortened, though, and covers all the bases.
