Advertisements. Youtube is a very well known name, and many people go to it every day. It had been owned by an independent company, but now Google owns it. What that means is that the website is now run by the same people who run Google. The owner earned money through ads. People pay money to Youtube to have their ads shown.

youtube only makes money off of advertisement on the website. by selling their company to google they profit a lot more. it doesn't cost money to make an account or upload videos onto youtube, since it is just widely known makes it much more expensive to buy.
