Being pulled up through the roots, through the trunk, through branches, into leaves, and transpired into the air through the stomata. The water is pulled because it is used in the leaves for photosynthesis to transform CO2 to glucose. An end product is oxygen, which must escape through the stomata into the air. Because there is often excess water, the water escapes through the stomata also.
