Political assassinations have gone on a long time; whether it be attempted or succeeding in them. Fidel Castro, Saddam Hussein, Stalin, Pol Pot, Kim Jong Il.. to name a few have had been the subject of assassination attempts by the American government and other nations as well.

Are governments "allowed" to do this?

No. A democratic government has other methods that are lawful methods that if utilized by persons who are knowledgable in re to their responsibilities, can enact the practice of law to remove them civily.

So no they can't legally ...but you know it still happens.

No, actually they are not.

The United Nations expressly forbids it under human rights...

Not that we would know anything about that with the state of media in America these days.

Karl Rove and Co. has most of America ignorant that we are an essential part of the UN - it's shocking how many Americans trash the UN while not recognizing that they are trashing a system we helped to create.

Technically, it's an act of war. The United States isn't allowed to, thanks to Ford's Executive order 12333 but that was relaxed by the Bush administration when the War on Terror started. If you've got a chance to kill Osama, you do it.

I don't think "allowing" has much to do with it since there are no effective organizations for policing nations. Nations will do whatever they think they can get away with.

"Allowed" by whom? American law prohibits this, but it has not always been followed.

If failing to do anything to stop them is allowing, then I guess yes.....

When was the last time a leader who rose to power by assasination wasn't recognized by the UN?

Stalin murdered 20 million Russians. If the US wanted to take him out, we would have had to stand in a very long line.
