First, simplify the equation.

On the left side, you can multiply x-3 by -2, remembering to distribute. On the right side, just multiply the two numbers. Remember that when multiplying, same-sign numbers give a positive product and opposite-signed numbers give a negative product.

-2x + 6 = 24

Now, you want to isolate the x by itself on one side.
Subtract 6 from both sides:
-2x + 6 - 6 = 24 - 6
-2x = 18

Divide both sides by -2:
-2x / -2 = 18 / -2
x = -9

That's all there is to it!

first you distriute which you would get -2x+6=24 then you subtract 6 then you would get 18 then you would divide -2 to 18 so your answer is -9

Starting with the Left hand side:
- multiply the bracket out, which gives you:
-2x + 6

On the right hand side
-3 * -8 = 24 (because two -ve signs make a +ve)

Combining them we have
-2x + 6 = 24

Taking the 6 to the right hand side gives you:
-2x = 18

Dividing by -2 to leave x on its own gives you:
x = -9

-2(x-3)=-3(-8)
- 2x + (-2)(-3) = -24
- 2x + 6 = -24
- 2x + 6 - 6 = -24 - 6
- 2x = -30
2x = 30
x = 15

start out with distributive property..which gives
-2x+6=24
solve for x:
place the +6 on the other side making it -6
-2x=24-6
then divide the left and right side by -2 ..leaving x by itself
24%-2= -12 -6%-2=+3
so...
x=-12+3
x=-9

Well, since both sides are negative, you can get rid of that - technically you're multiplying each side by -1.
Thus 2(x-3) = 3(-8). Might as well simplify that right side by actually multiplying the three times the minus eight,
Thus 2(x-3) = -24. Now go ahead and expand the left side, multiplying the two times each of the numbers inside the parentheses -
Thus 2x - 6 = -24. Let's get rid of the -6 by adding 6 to each side 2x - 6 + 6 = -24 +6, so 2x = -18. Thus x = -9.

Havent messed with this in a while but here is a run that i think is correct...
First distribute....
-2x + 6= 24 move 6 over by subtracting..
-2x=18 divide the whole equation by -2
x=-9 (-9 * -2=18)

First you use the distributive rule to multiply the -2 by both the x and the -3 in parenthesis....

Then you just keep going, doing the same thing to both sides to isolate the variable (the x)

-2(x-3) = -3(-8)
-2x + 6 = -3(-8) -2x + 6 = 24
-2x = 18
x = -9

distribute -2 to x and -3 and do the same with -3 to -8
so -2x+6=24
subtract 6
-2x=18
divide -2
x=-9

2007-12-31 10:17:50 · answer #9 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

-2(x-3) = -3(-8)
Distribute by multiplying -2 by x and 3
You will get -2x + 6 = 24
subtract 6 from 24
you will get -2x = 18
divide by -2
you will get x= -9
