SIXTEEN TONS: Originally written and sung by MERLE TRAVIS. He wrote it in 1946, the year I was born. I had the honor of hearing him sing and meeting and talking with him and his first wife, Betty, in Saigon, South Viet Nam in April of 1967. The only thing I had for him to sign (and his wife) was my orders back to the states. When I checked at my next command here in the states, the personnelman wanted to know whose signature that was. He had never heard of Merle Travis.

Tennessee Ernie Ford! "16 Tons"~~That's a great old folksong, and he did a great job of interpreting it. His voice is incredible, and he was very funny, too! Remember him as Lucy's cousin?

I'm not a country fan, by the way. But, I have to note that Ernie wasn't considered country back then. Back then, they didn't have all of these separate stations and charts.
