In my country the Philippines, the tradition for the New Year is always associated with a combination of Hispanic Roman Catholic and Chinese traditions in welcoming in a new year.

From the Hispanic Roman Catholic tradition there is the traditional midnight December 31st Mass to usher in and welcome the New Year. This midnight new year vesper's Mass is always well attended by many peoples, and after the Mass the peoples make the countdown for the new year.

And from the Chinese there is the sounding of noises and the blowing of firecrackers and fireworks in order to usher in good luck and to drive away bad spirits and demons. From the Chinese also come the "good luck" traditions of eating or displaying any object that would symbolize money --- round or golden objects --- in order to bring in good luck and abundance for the new year.
