in 1987 we were so pour we had a tin of tomato soup for the family of 5 per day. we watered it down and had it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
this went on for quite a few months. we were over the moon when we were able to afford a different flavour soup.
i can not eat tomato soup anymore. it makes me gag these days. yuck.

That would have been when my oldest child was an infant. We had an unexpected and very expensive expense and I had to choose between daycare and groceries. Daycare won since I wouldn't even be able to go to work without daycare for my child. Thankfully the daycare provided breakfast and lunch for her. I had just enough food already in the home for her dinners, but I couldn't have anything but either one bowl of cereal or a peanut butter sandwich per day for nearly three months. I lost nearly 25 pounds during that time. My clothes were hanging off of me and I felt dizzy and exhausted all the time. It was horrible and I was in bad shape. Now I can go to any grocery store and put whatever I want in the cart without a second thought as to the price, but I'll never forget what it means to not have enough food. I volunteer at a food pantry one to two days per week.

I put seasoned salt in hot water and pretended it was soup...there were no pennies left to scrape.
