Well, The Ramones did it best as far as American punk & jump starting the whole punk scene but the British did punk better! My favorite was The Damned, followed by The Buzzcocks! The Sex Pistols & The Clash were good but get way more credit than they deserve!!

The Adolescents
Bad Brains
Black Flag
Circle Jerks
The Dead Boys
Dead Kennedys
Dropkick Murphys
Gang Green
Iggy Pop
Johnny Thunders
Minor Threat
Rancid
Talking Heads
and my favorite British ones are:
The Sex Pistols
The Clash
The Adicts
Buzzcocks
The Professionals
Penetration
Sid Vicious
Uproar
Youth In Asia
American has more stuff, but I think the British is of higher quality

I have to agree with Thunderbird!!! The Ramones changed the way music was done but The Damned were a very under rated punk band!!! True punks in everyway!!!! The Brits definitely did punk better!!!

Some would say Iggy & the Stooges were the first true "punk" band...they certainly influenced both the Ramones and New York Dolls, who in turn went to the UK and helped jumpstart the whole punk movement there. Overall, though, I prefer the musical contributions of the British bands, especially the Clash...but, truth be told, I prefer the "post-punk" movement of bands like Gang of Four.

I have a preference for American punk, such as the Dead Kennedys, the Ramones, and The Plasmatics (borderline punk), and GG Allin who more or less gives me a chuckle, but I also like Crass a whole lot, and give "mad props" to Johnny Lydon for being the punkest punk that's ever punked. I like Misfits as a guilty pleasure, since the emo kids have grabbed onto them as a means to say they're "punk" (a word I also prefer to not associate with for the same reason).

Dave is totally right. I can't stand these new bands that claim to be "punk" when their sound is nothing punk at all. They sure like to dress the part though, and I find it hilarious.
For me it has always been the Sex Pistols, and Misfits (Danzig era) as my two favorites.
