There are several free antivirus programs available. Free does not mean poor quality. The 3 most popular are Antivir, Avast and AVG. I should also mention that there is a free edition of BitDefender Antivirus. The free edition uses the same scanning engine as its commercial version, however, it only provides on demand virus scanning (i.e. no real time protection). Antivir, Avast and AVG provide both on demand and real time protection. In addition, Grisoft, makers of AVG Antivirus, is offering a limited time promotion of their AVG Pro version for free. AVG Pro adds spyware protection in addition to virus protection. The promotion ends on 1/17/2008. Here are some links:

1. Antivir, Avast and AVG free edition (http://www.filehippo.com/software/antivirus/)

2. BitDefender Antivirus free edition (http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-8-Free-Edition.html)

3. AVG Pro promotion (http://www.computeractive.co.uk/avg/index)

Note: AVG Pro is free but Grisoft will not offer tech support for this promotion - which is no surprise.

Freeafterrebate.info is always running deals for free antivirus programs. I don't know how good any of them are, as I don't run antivirus, I use firefox browser and don't allow install on demand. I've been going about 5 years without a virus.

Do not buy any anti-virus software. The best anti-virus software out there is completely free at http://free.grisoft.com It works better than anything you could pay for. I have been using it for 6 years and not a virus yet.

Have you tried AVG Anti-Virus? It's free and although I found it a little annoying at times (it updates itself all the time) it does have AWESOME coverage.

And it's free!
