I've been having a lot of trouble lately with my 17 y/o son; its disgusting, I know, but he just wont take showers. Ever. To get him to take one is awful; he'll get grumpy and wont speak to us, acts surly, etc. Its just not worth the trouble- so he takes one, if this, once a month. He also will not shave his beard or get a haircut. Is this some kind of trend, rebellion, what? I don't think its his friends, because he has normal friends- all of them take showers and whatnot. Its nasty that he doesn't seem to have proper hygiene, but he does know how to shave, take showers, etc obviously. What can I do?

This has been going on for a little over a year now; nothing traumatic has happened to cause him to act this way, at least nothing I know of.

You need to not let him have any privaleges until he shapes uup, that is very disgusting, don't let him leave the house, don't let him sit at the table, tell him he smells and needs to do something about it. he could either be really lazy or needs some sort of counceling. disgusting!

Okay this actually could be really serious. In a health class I took awhile back and I do NOT want to scare you but getting him a counsler or sitting down and having a long talk about what is and has been going on in his life. This is one of the many sides of thoughts of being VERY close to commiting suicide. There might have been something in his private life that he does not want to talk to you about. I could be wrong. but other signs are saying things like You guys would be better off if I just drove my car into a lake. Or odd things like that. He strives away from his freinds for a little while. Then starts givin his close personal things away to freinds. PLEASE watch out for this.

The more you argue with him the more he will defy you. Stop doing his washing, let him go around in dirty clothes. Do not give him clean sheets for his bed. Do not let him sit on chairs in dirty clothes. Then let him do his own thing, one day the kids at school will get all over him and that should straighten him out. If he wants to live that way let him I think he will soon change.

take away stuff that he tries to cover up his odor with such as, body spray, deoderant, stuff like that. and tell him if he took a proper shower he wouldnt need these things...does he have a girlfriend, if so have her tell him to shower or she wont hug or kiss him anymore cuz he stinks and has bad breath...if he doesnt ask him how he's gonna get a girl with b.o. like that.

let it go he'll bathe one of these days. just make sure he doesn't put his butt on anything clean

i bathe everyday now....

but last year when i was 16 i wouldn't bathe every day.(the longest ive ever gone without a bath was 5 days...never a month!)i bathed like every 2 or three days. my parents had to beg me to take a shower.

then one day i was at this social gathering where i had to hug people... and they could smell me!

ever since that day i take a bath everyday (and still do!)...and eventually a situation similar to mine will happen to your son... and the phase will be over...

It will work itself out when he meets a girl he likes. Unless she is the same way no girl will be able to stand being around him because of the smell. You could try telling him that if he is interested in a girl that she might be more willing to go out with him if he showered more often.
