He needs to run his antivirus and antispyware aplications in Safe Mode to try and get rid of the malware. To get into Safe Mode, reboot and then either hold down or tap the F8 key repeatedly while the computer is starting up.
If he hasn't any antivirus and antispyware applications, here are some free ones for his consideration. Download, check for updates, reboot into safe mode and run the scans.
====================
AntiSpyware Applications
SuperAntispyware

Spybot S&D (free version requires manual updating)

AVG AntiSpyware

Adaware from Lavasoft (free version requires automatic updating)

(These programs can be run in Safe Mode after installation and updating)
=====================
Antivirus Solutions
AVG 7.5 AntiVirus (Vista Compatible)

Avast Home Antivirus (Vista Compatible)
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
AntiVir PE (Vista Compatible)

( Note: Only use one anti-virus product. Running more than one can cause conflicts thus rendering each ineffective.

Try uninstalling AIM or whatever Instant Message device he has, and install some free anti-virus programs.

Spybot S&D and AVG should be able to clean almost any virus, but it's much more difficult once they're in place. Download those (they're free) and run them until they come back clean.
You may need to run them in safe mode (press F8 during bootup) to completely clean out nasty infestations.

Sounds like a virus!
If you don't have an antivirus program already, download AVG Anti-Virus: it's free and awesome. Run a full system scan over and over until you don't get anymore findings.
I'd also recommend downloading and running AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy - both spy/ad ware killing programs that are free. I used to run them both because whatever one missed, the other one picked up.
Good luck!

Did he actually get a virus, or did he give out his screen name and password on a fraudulent website that looked real. I say this because you can't be online when your computer is not on.

It's literally a ghost of his profile stored on the server that the virus came from ... it trying to make his contact list believe he's online so they too will click on any links "He" sends them ... download some spyware removers such as Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy ... those should help

Tell him to change his IM password. That might help. Virus's are horrible and can really be a pain in the rear.
