If it was next to the Sun, it could be any of the visible planets: Mercury is always fairly close, Venus always within about 45 degrees, and even Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn can appear right next to the Sun when they're on the opposite side of the solar system from us.
If it was recent, it wasn't Mars. Probably Jupiter or Mercury.

Planet X is out there; it's orbit has been established, but it is too far out to be seen by anything your dad has access to. What your dad shot was probably one of the larger meteors as it rounded the sun.

A planet next to the sun? Are you sure he's not talking about the planet Mercury?

Um, I think if there is a Planet X, it wouldn't be visible from Earth. So at least you can rule out that there's no mystery planet in that photograph.

No! But, if there ever is one, I hope we come up with a more original name for it!
