Wow, you are one lucky kid! I personally, absolutely love the 6 series, but the M5 is definately sportier. Since your only about 18, I'd go with the M5, I think the 6 is more for older people like me.

Both cars are great, but each totally represent perhaps 2 different sides in the performance spectrum.
Granted the M5 might have better engine and sort, but more likely you will think the 6 series is more fun drive due to its super-car DNA (suspension, brakes etc.) . Possibly you might want to consider a M6 which does go faster then the M5 and has more performance then the M5.
Both cars sport luxury features.
The M5 is made so you can haul your friends to the night-club or fancy restaurant in style. I think there is more room in the back, not to mention more features for your friends in the back to fidget with.
So most likely you will lose in a race against a 6 series or an M6, but you and your friends will be incredibly pampered doing so.
Conclusion:
6 series is a more purpose-built car for racing/driving, while the M5 is more of a luxury car (with performance), but what is most surprising is that the M5 is really close to the performance of the 6 or M6.
I think M5 is better for everyday use. Your love your M5, whether you are driving on the freeway, or in your neighbroughood. But if you are driving on a race track, then the 6 or M6 is the way to go.
So which do you pick ? Beauty (M5) or the Beast (6 series / M6) ?
Note: I'm sorry, but for my answer I assumed you were comparing the M5 sedan and the 6 series coupe. Maybe you were thinking of the touring or the convertible.

Many of the posters of the answers here have no idea what they are talking about. The essential difference between the BMW 5 and 6 is the 5 is a sedan and the 6 is a coupe (or convertible coupe). The sedan sits higher and is more conservative (even as an M5). The coupe sits lower and is more sporty (and the M6 is a world-class sports car).
There really shouldn't be much consideration here. Either you want a conservative 4-door sedan or you want a sporty 2-door coupe. Other than that, the respective models offer the same engines and power specifications. I have the M6. It is for serious drivers only.
Answer your own questions and review the cars at BMW's website.

You really need to go and drive them. No other way to know for sure otherwise!
I had ordered a 2007 M5 but delayed purchasing because BMW introduced a whole bunch of equally cool cars with it: specifically the Z4-M, the M6 and the turbo 3-series.
I test drove all of them and decided to go with the Z4-M instead, but that was based purely on the driving experience.
The M5 is an awesome car, but I am not a fan of the SMG transmission with the paddle shift. If money is no option, then you cannot go wrong with the M5 -- it looks like a sleeper car and might be mistaken as a 530 or 550 (until folks notice the grilles and quad pipes) OR until you push the button to kick in 500HP!!
The 6-series is a cool car, but is more of a cruiser (I love the convertible). No where near as much horsepower, but if you haven't driven a high-performance car before, it might be a better choice. The 5.0 liter engine is no slouch BTW...
I would recommend waiting until spring and ordering the new 8-cylinder M3! The 335i turbo is a close second, but an M is an M - 'nuff said.
If you don't have the driving experience with any of the M cars, or something with 400HP+ I would recommend going to one of the BMW-offered performance driving classes in advance of buying the car. The class was a ton of fun, and you also get to drive the whole series of cars you are interested in.

I believe the 5 series is near the end of production so the new generation of 5 series will be coming out soon. Hence no changes (or hardly) from 2007 to 2008 M5.
I would go for the 6 series, its more rare in my opinion.

Surely the jag as people will not instantly hate you as they would a bmw driver? therefore making your time driving a more pleasant one.also the xf is a newer model, it still turns heads and the bmw 6 has been out a while now and is no big deal.I would buy the Jaguar, in a dark colour.

If it were me I'd go M5 all the way. But I'm 28 years old and your what? 17,18? Be sensable and save mom and pop a couple bucks. Get a 2007 Infiniti G35s. It's sporty and it will still make a statement.

dude...............dude..........ok. ask for the bmw 330i, the twin turbo 330 HP ....or the M3 coupe with the shoehorned V8 (about 400 HP) under the hood. Option it up to your liking.
Ask if you can do something else with all the money you just saved your Dad.
If you need more advice on how to spend the difference, what maybe 20 grand.....write back and w'll talk some more.
