Thanks in advance for the help. I got project on mercury and the element's like confusing me.
What is mercury's electron configuration?
Some sites have the configuration as this: [Xe] 4f14 5d10 6s2
and others as this: [Xe]6s24f145d10.
WHICH IS CORRECT? x_x;

Technically, both are correct. The first one you have is just written in the order of energy. The second one is written in the way you would write it if you read it directly off a periodic table. Both would be marked correct.

Both are correct. The first one: [Xe] 4f14 5d10 6s2 is written in order of increasing energy. While the second one: [Xe]6s24f145d10 is written how it appears on the periodic table.

Both are the same, but usually the first one is "more" correct because if the mercury atom where to lose electrons, it would lose it from the 6s2 orbital. Assuming it lost 1 electron, the config would be [Xe] 4f14 5d10 6s1.
