Yesterday December 30, my 8 year old son was playing with is brand new $165 skateboard. He was told to bring everything inside and put it away. That was around 5:15pm. This morning the skateboard, which my son thought was in the garage is gone. I either suspect he left it out front on or near the sidewalk leaving it open for anyone living in our area to just pick it up and take it. We live in an area which has no through streets so anyone passing our house has to pretty much live on our block or the 3 other dead end streets. If it was stolen, we suspect an older child who showed interest in the skateboard yesterday, asking questions like how much it cost. What steps should I take in tryng to find my son's skateboard? Should I approach the boy who we suspect might have taken it and question him, call the police, please give advice, thankyou.

Sorry but you are stuck. Unless you have proof, no cop can do anything. It sucks but hopefully it teaches your kid a big lesson about listeningto you and taking responsibility for his stuff.

Again, sorry. I know it sucks to be ripped off.

Basically you purchased a skatebord that was cool and expensive for an 8 year old. But in this day and age $165 once you put on the wheels sickers and all of that it is not so expensive compared to what you could spend.

But it could have even been something that was $20 and it could have been stolen if it was laying around.

It could have been any of the kids. But even if the kid you suspect does not have it he might give up who does.

First call the police and file a police report. If you have credit card or debit reciepts (which you can get) that would be great. But you can still report it otherwise.

Odds are if the kid stole it when the police come to inquire the parents will get to the bottom of it. Or you may speak to the parents and explain that you have reported it stolen and of course "as parents" it would be best for all to get to the bottom off this.

Confronting the child would be bad news.

File a police report....call your homeowners insurance company. Otherwise....that's it. Look at OJ.

Anything else and you could be accused of crimes.

Next time.....re-think giving an 8 yr old such an expensive toy. They aren't responsible enough to handle it. Either in your own yard or being pounded for it down the street.

Go talk to his parents and tell them you are looking for your son's skateboard and politely ask them if they could ask their son about it.

Most people are generally honest. The other kid might have it but now can't give it back without incriminating his self. His parents would be the best way to approach that.

But if you see him on the street and he has the board---you still need to ask his parents to get it back.

If that does not work--then get the police involved but by then it comes down to you word against his.

Hmm so is it possible it was taken from the garage? I hate to blame your son if he really did not leave it out front. I would try to get a picture of the board online, make some flyers and you go to each neighbor saying could they please let you know if they see one like this and tell them about the episode. I wouldnt approach the exact boy first but definitely his parents.. Sure call police too! They need to know crime in your area.

Not a lot you can do because while you have reasons to suspect the older child you have no proof. You can contact the police and tell them what you posted here. They may go over and ask the kid about the skateboard, however if he denies it there is nothing they can do. Not nearly enough probable cause to conduct a search or arrest him.

Definitely call the police and make a report. If it cost that much and you have a receipt and a police report, you can claim the cost on your home owners insurance and at least recoup the loss. Chances are, you'll never find it unless you SEE one of the kids riding it. They won't tell you the truth if they did take it. You could drop the hint to them though, that you know it was stolen because SOMETIMES...one will tell on the other.
