This all depends on what you are painting. if it is a flat surface, use a short nap roller, if it's a heavy textured surface, you will need a longer nap to get into the crevices.
As to what type of roller cover you will need, most roller covers are fine for latex paint. You will want to get a synthetic bristle brush to use as well.
The paint that you are going to use should say what type of brush that they recommend.

I agree with DIY. I do a lot of painting and he hit it on the nail. A good foam roller seems to hold more paint and 3/8 nap holds paint better than others. I just painted my office cranberry which takes a gray primer to get a true color when painting anything int he red colors. Don't forget to prime the walls. It makes such a difference even though it is time consuming. You will be glad you did.

The two best roller covers are Purdy White Dove and Wooster non shedding. Cheap rollers will shed fibers onto the walls. For a smooth surface use 3/8 inch nap. For textured surfaces you will need a heavier nap roller. For brushes I prefer Purdy XL series. Wooster makes a good brush and there are some smaller brands that make good brushes. Wooster makes a lot of private label brushes like the Benjamin Moore and ICI brushes and rollers. Don't skimp on brushes and rollers. Good ones make the job a lot easier and you will get better results.

No offense but go with Satin. Flat is too porous and endures soiling poorly.

Depending on the job you have and the texture/smoothness of a finish you want an acrylic fiber cheapo might work for a brush, as well as a bristle throw away. Certainly you could spend $30 on a 3 inch PURDY.

The shorter the nap on a roller cover, the smoother the finish. 3/8 inch is common for household use. The shorter nap loads easier, uses less paint initially, but needs to be loaded slightly more often. A smoother finish can be obtained with foam roller covers.

It's not the paint that you need to know but the surface. Meaning is that if your painting a wall you can use a 240 mm but if are painting a ceiling then you would use a fluffier one. the paint has nothing to do with the type of roller
