GameStop had a special deal partnering with Nintendo ONLY on December 21st where you could reserve one and get it by Jan 28 guaranteed.
To answer your question, they're hard to find because everyone wants them, and rightly so. Also, they have been hard to find almost since they were released, but increasingly so around the 2007 holidays (not surprisingly).

Its the perfect gift for kids because the majority of the games are non-violent and it is very very popular, and it is considered the most popular Christmas present this year...so everyone if going to wanna buy it.
