"Ibn al-Haytham: First Scientist" by Bradley Steffens tells the fascinating, true story of a medieval Muslim scholar who overcame bouts of mental illness to develop the scientific method two hundred years before the Europeans learned of it—by reading his books. It was just chosen by California Readers to be part of the 2008 California Collection for teens.

Chronicles of Narnia is probably the safest bet, as I hear the books are really, really good. Ryan Callaway's "Six Faces", or if you can wait until June, Yearly Harvest. It depends on how old of a teen, though, as SF might be a tad bit too scary for under 15. I was 16 when I first read it a couple of years ago, and I really liked so that's probably a good age if your parents are okay with it. Interestingly enough, the main character is a young woman named Aya (I saw that one of the other answers mentioned a character with the same name), and she is basically called in to help with an investigation of murders in a small town. There are a lot of great themes and it's not just a "horror" story so that's my suggestion.

well, a good book depends on how the context makes you feel. If the book is really nice to you, you'll be touched and want to finish it quickly and find out what happens.

Suggestions: My Louisianna Sky, The true Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Where the Red Fern Grows, Search for Delicious, Jennifer Murdley's Toad, City of Ember, Time Stops for no Mouse, Castle in the Attic, Number The Stars, The Spiderwick choronicles,The Great Gilly Hopkins, Because of Winn Dixie, Bridge to Terabithia

Hope it helps

uglies, pretties, special, and extras by Scott Westerfeld. (i know you asked for 1 book...but it's a series. lol!)

it's a series (really it's a trilogy - then extras is a continuation) set in the future, w/a society focused on beauty. when a girl turns 16, she undergo's surgery to turn from a "ugly" to a "pretty". Before she meets Shay, Tally is beyond ready to get the surgery, but now Tally must decide whether to undergo surgery or - listen to her friend Shay's radical ideas about dodging the surgery. All of the adventures Tally goes on leads her to discover a dangerous truth behind the pretty-making surgery... The story continues in pretties and specials...but i won't ruin it for you.

In extras, the series continues, but focuses on a different character - Aya, a few years after Tally. Now society is focused on fame - each person has a face rank from 1 to 1 million. Aya's face rank is 451,369. Not exactly happy-making. In this society 'kicking" a big story(or feed) boosts your face rank. Aya is determined to boost her face rank, and goes undercover to get footage to kick a feed. what she discovers though - is way more than she intended to get into...
