As long as you are comfortable, this position is fine. Many prefer the left side as it relieves pressure on the inferior vena cava .

No. After about your 20th week laying on your back can cut off blood flow and oxygen to the placenta. Lack of oxygen to the baby can lead to learning problems, Cerebral Palsy, and babies being still born.

It is best to sleep on your left side. It is ok to sleep on the right side but better on the left. It is not advised that you sleep on your back.
You can lay on your back for a little while, but try to sleep on your side.

It is not considered safe after 12 weeks for extended periods of time... usually longer than 15 or so minutes. The reason is due to the excess weight of your uterus, baby, etc. It can rest on top of a main vein which could cut off circulation to your lower body and/or baby.

I sometimes would flip to my back in the middle of the night and then wake up. My doctor told me if that happens, don't stress it. Usually you wake up a bit after flipping because your body "knows" its the wrong position. He said just flip back to a side and go back to bed.

if you feel okay then it is fine...if you start feeling pain, or numbness you should turn to your side.

My doc told me to put a pillow under my right hip just to make sure I wasn't FLAT on my spine but that it would be OK as long as I wasn't feeling any discomfort.
