I remember reading about the structure of the army and met the term "corps". An elderly relative told me it didn't sound very nice the way I was pronouncing it, corpse.

We were driving by a Catholic cemetery and I saw a small gate that said "Pedestrian Entrance" but I read it "Presbyterian Entrance" because I figured only the Catholics could go in through the front entrance.
My parents got a good laugh out of that one.

The first time I ran across the word surface, I thought it was pronounced "sewer-face". I wasn't so quick to raise my hand in reading class after that.

No, if I mispronounced anything, I was told there is the dictionary learn to use it and sound out the words or get a smack. Great incentive to learn to speak properly and read better too. I did for the longest time have trouble with my R's when speaking, I always thought the kids next door were name Woger and Wonnie? Got that smacked into my head too!
