Lemon juice. Then wash them after soaking in it.

I had the same problem.

I now use detergent and hot water....be sure to take them out the the washer soon after they are done.
Sitting around wet too long in the washer will make them smell.
Use a nice smelling fabric sheet in the dryer.

As soon as they are done washing put them in the dryer. If you leave them in the wash they will stink. Also when you hange them up in the bathroom make sure they can dry.

When you wash them, add a half cup of baking soda to the wash. Then add a half cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle.
If possible, hang them to dry and then put them in the dryer for two minutes to soften them.

A half cup of bleach added to the water, not on the towels.

Baking soda in the wash cycle, vinegar in the rinse cycle, then spray Febreze onto wet towels and toss them in the dryer. Actually any or all these would be great to freshen and remove the smells. To prevent them, store in a dry place, such as a hall closet just outside the bathroom, so that humidity doesn't make them damp and sour smelling. You may have a moisture problem in the bath (or wherever the towels are stored) so you can also check your ventilation systems. You can also toss an open box of baking soda (or the kind with the mesh front sold to put in your fridge) in the cupboard where you store the towels.

There may be too much humidity in your home or bathroom. I would wash them and put them in the dryer and make sure they come out completely dry.

Use Borax in the wash along with detergent with hot water.

I bleach all my towels, no matter the color. It does fade them but I'd rather have them super clean.
