Since the works of both authors you mentioned are protected under copyright law:

"How long does a copyright last?
The term of copyright for a particular work depends on several factors, including whether it has been published, and, if so, the date of first publication. As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. For an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire, the copyright endures for a term of 95 years from the year of its first publication or a term of 120 years from the year of its creation, whichever expires first. For works first published prior to 1978, the term will vary depending on several factors. To determine the length of copyright protection for a particular work, consult chapter 3 of the Copyright Act (title 17 of the United States Code). More information on the term of copyright can be found in Circular 15a, Duration of Copyright, and Circular 1"

I'm afraid that you won't find their books for free anywhere on-line.
You might try your local library, though.

Since it's only opinion, I'll take a shot. I would go for guitar under all those circumstances. There's a wide variety of videos out there in all styles and graded from basic beginner to intermediate at least. For events and casual time, the guitar is a convenient companion. It's easy to carry and tune on the spot. It's a very popular instrument for singing, and it costs a lot less than a piano. If you're just after a really fun carry-along instrument for parties check out the ukulele. It's making a huge come back in popularity and is even quicker and easier than the guitar. Plus, once you've mastered the ukulele, you can transfer all the skills to the guitar and go even farther.

Try the Baen Free Library. They probably don't have the authors you listed -- most of what they have is science fiction and fantasy -- but they do have free ebooks in a variety of formats, including HTML and RTF.

If you are willing to pay a small amount for the books, try Fictionwise.com. (They have a few free ebooks, but they also have a free library, for Fictionwise members.)
