Is it just me or what? It seems like this country has no nationalism at all. If you look at Canada, every business has a Maple Leaf in their logo. Also, we are way too politically correct. This whole African-Italian-Mexican-whatever American is way out of control. I promise if North Korea ever goes to war with us, it won't just be agianst Japanese-Americans. What's up with all this hurt feelings and stuff? They have shows like Dr. Phil talking about bullying in school. It's all part of life. Get over it. People complain about the war in Iraq, but to be honest 4,000 isn't a lot compared to other wars. I don't like to see anyone lose their life, but if you are going to engage in war, you will lose lives. I served in the military and it seems to me the people complaining most are the ones who drive around in Hummers with children that would never join the military.

"Typical conservative trash.
4,000 isn't a lot? What kind of insane garbage is that? Tell that to all of the families who have lost a loved one in this war for oil.
They need to send your butt to Iraq, to see how willing you are to gladly die in a war for oil."
Actually I voted for Kerry, if you must know. You obviously read too fast, as you assumed I support the war. I was in the military and I know people, who died in Iraq. The war with the greatest number of casualties was the Civil War FYI. Like I said if you go to war, you can not believe that everyone will come back.

I was referring to American deaths only. At least 618,000 Americans died in the Civil War. My point is not whether one agrees or disagrees with war. But, the reaction seems selfish and insincere by a lot of people.
That was a very honest and respectable answer, neoredpill, unlike the not very astute ash.

I was with you until you said "4,000 isn't a lot". It's amazing how many people can take things out of context. 4000 comparatively to other wars. I completely agree, it totally sucks if your son or brother died.
My point is when a country or a person engages in war. You are completely naive to think that no one will die. I believe JFK said it best, when describing why we should go to the moon. He said because it is hard, not because it is easy.
War is not easy. To merely cut tail and run, would be a mistake. My point here is that Americans do not have the stomach to persevere anymore. We want everything easy. We fill our lives with gadgets to do everything for us, we complain when our food is not cooked perfect in a restaurant. We complain about everything. As the saying goes, "Put up or shut up?"

Not all Americans are soft. Most of my hometown friends that are of Filipino descent have joined the military yet there are Filipinos in other states that abhor military service out of spite ( SF bay area?) But that's not us. I can speak for many that have the same background as I (military Filipino) that our loyalties lie in the country in which we were born in ---America. I served in the Corps, my father served in the Navy, hell....most of my extended family paid their dues by serving 20 or more in the military just to get here to America!
Those Americans you are talking about are probably the suburban glut that do not even want to be reminded we are in a state of war. Complacency kills, so watch out suburbanites, because the REAL America wants you to change your habits. Don't be soft, don't be a communist by shopping at Wal-Mart for goods made in China just because you want to save an American dollar. BUT, realize that America is here for those who want it most. Everyone that doesn't want to be here, just get out.

Nope, you've just clearly demonstrated the infamous American arrogance which always gets you guys in trouble. By the way, as a Canadian, I can tell you that American companies are usually the ones that put Canada Flags on their logos.

So much to respond to here. For starters, 4,000 doesn't begin to reach the number killed in Iraq. To date, there have been more than 4,200 dead amongst the Iraq Coalition Forces, but this does not count the Iraqi casualties. The most scientific surveys of Iraqi dead indicate that more than 1 million Iraqis have lost their lives as the result of an invasion with no legal authority. (And for the record, I drive a compact car, not a Hummer.)
"Political correctness" is just a term the right came up with to attack the left. Bullying is wrong and should be opposed. Respect for people of different cultures, etc., is also simply the right thing to do. Besides, the right has their own form of political correctness: "death tax" instead of estate tax, "cut and run" to describe those of us who argue that we should never have invaded Iraq in the first place, "Defense of Marriage" is really discrimination against gays, etc.
Also, it is not whining or being weak-hearted to stand up for what you feel is right. Those "PC" types that you berate often do so even at times when public opinion is against them, and it takes courage to do so. Many of us were savaged as "anti-american" or "unpatriotic" or even "terrorist sympathizers" for opposing the illegal invasion of Iraq, which had nothing to do with terrorism anyway.

Nationalism is never a benefit to a society's public rather it is promoted by a society's ruling elites in order to garner support for imperialism.
Working class Americans killing working class Iraqis so that America's wealthiest capitalists can steal their oil only benefits America's wealthiest capitalists. Of course, the underclass of the imperialist nation would never subscribe to having the public treasury and the public army used to promote the private gain of wealthy individuals, so they must be lied to about the causes of the war. Since the majority of the public is not completely brain dead and mindlessly willing to believe whatever propaganda is inflicted upon them by that wealthy-elite, the public must be repressed. Patriot Acts must be implemented and "free speech zones" erected. Habeus Corpus must be turned into a dead letter. War is an affront to the working class people of the nation waging that war.

War is a Racket
By Major General Smedley Butler
War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the many.
I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else. If a nation comes over here to fight, then we'll fight. The trouble with America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag.
I wouldn't go to war again as I have done to protect some lousy investment of the bankers. There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights. War for any other reason is simply a racket.
There isn't a trick in the racketeering bag that the military gang is blind to. It has its "finger men" to point out enemies, its "muscle men" to destroy enemies, its "brain men" to plan war preparations, and a "Big Boss" Super-Nationalistic-Capitalism.
It may seem odd for me, a military man to adopt such a comparison. Truthfulness compels me to. I spent thirty- three years and four months in active military service as a member of this country's most agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle- man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism.
I suspected I was just part of a racket at the time. Now I am sure of it. Like all the members of the military profession, I never had a thought of my own until I left the service. My mental faculties remained in suspended animation while I obeyed the orders of higher-ups. This is typical with everyone in the military service.
I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912 (where have I heard that name before?). I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested.
During those years, I had, as the boys in the back room would say, a swell racket. Looking back on it, I feel that I could have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.
