Easy. Look at the periodic table. On the left side of the STAIR division line are METALS. They have a tendency to lose electrons, and thus form positive ions or cations. On the other hand, elements above and to the right of the division line are non-metal elements and for the most part will rather have negative charges and form anions.

Ionic compounds are formed from metallic cations combining with non-metallic anions.

Covalents are formed for the most part from two or more non-metallic elements.
