Temp. gauge on nissan sunny lx 1270cc petrol .
needle hardly moves even when engine is hot
Ihave changed sender & thermostat ,
When shorted down to deck needle swings ok
Any ideas ?

Sounds like the engine could be short of water. If water doesn't flow past the sender unit the reading will be low. Does the heater work really well.? If not there is not enough water in there. When the engine is cold,open the header tank and squeeze the bottom and top hoses several times and see if any air bubbles come up. DO NOT do this when the engine is HOT or you may get scalded.
Also when the engine is cold,remove the header tank cap and start the engine. If bubbles show in the header tank,or water overflows straight away ..you may have a head gasket gone. Don't forget to add the correct ammount of anti freeze. Good Luck.

Got an air pocket in the cylinder head? That will cause a bad reading even if you have good heat in the car. Make sure that the motor ground wire is good, run an extra ground from the cylinder head to the negative battery terminal just to check it. If you used too much thread sealer or tape on the new sending unit it could effect the sensors ground, try holding a jumper wire from the negative battery terminal to the sending unit housing and see if the gauge reads better.

Check the sending unit again. It could be a "new defective". Allso,check the wiring and all connections including the gauge. Allso why are you looking at the petrol gauge when you're talking about Engine Temp. Or am I just retarded.

Probably best off getting an after-market sender and guage. They are far more accurate and reliable. Engine temp is very important to know to avoid serious failures.

Could be in the calibration of the dial. It may not move much at the current level being sent by the thermostat. Put an ammeter into the circuit and see what is coming from the thermostat. You'll need a shop manual to know what the correct readings are and how the gauge should swing.

Could be a couple of things, first of it could be the thermostat is stuck open or its possible that the temperature gauge is damaged.
